What are Reverse Osmosis Water Filters?

The Reverse Osmosis system is the highest level of filtration offered by Purestream Water Filters, removing contaminants up to 0.0005 microns. These units come in both undersink and countertop models and utilise multi-stage filtration to leave you with pure drinking water on tap. All of our Reverse Osmosis systems remove chlorine, sediment, viruses, bacteria, heavy metals, and fluoride. A full spec sheet can be found by following this link.

Reverse Osmosis Waste Ratio

Pure water is produced at approximately 1 litre every 5-6 minutes. There is also a waste component, with 1 litre of pure water to 1-1/2 litres of waste water. As the Reverse Osmosis system achieves such a high level of filtration, all of the rejected contaminants will flow out of the waste water, which can either go directly down your drain or be collected for alternate use. This waste water is created as the water is pushed through the membrane filter in the Reverse Osmosis system – any water that doesn’t reach all the way through to the centre of this filter are rejected as they are larger than the 0.0005 micron rating that this system achieves. This means that the pure water that comes out of the Reverse osmosis system contains under 10 ppm of minerals, making it the highest level of filtration that we offer at Purestream Water Filters Australia.

Countertop Reverse Osmosis

Ideal for people who rent and do not want a permanent installation. Sits on the kitchen bench and attaches directly to the end of your kitchen faucet via the aerator thread.

Your countertop reverse osmosis has two tubes exiting the unit; one is the black waste tube, which can be directed down the drain, or collected for use on the garden or used for washing. The blue tube contains your pure water and can be stored in containers, or used directly from the system. As this countertop filtration system doesn’t utilise a tank, water comes out of the system at production rate. Production of pure water is approx. 1 litre every 5-6 minutes.

Undersink Reverse Osmosis

Ideal for families who are able to install a filtration system underneath the kitchen sink. This is the most convenient Reverse Osmosis unit as it has its own storage tank, allowing water to come out of the tap at a standard water pressure. The tank is automatically filled as the system is used, providing a constant supply of high-quality filtered Reverse Osmosis water directly out of your filtered water faucet. Any water that doesn’t make it through the filtration system and into the tank will be deposited directly down your drain pipe.

More information is available on the removal and filtration capacity of our Reverse Osmosis systems.

Reverse Osmosis is the most effective means of water purification and will remove up to 98% of heavy metals, up to 96% of contaminants such as sulphites and sulphates, up to 95% of fluoride as well as micro-organisms including giardia, cryptosporidium, viruses and bacteria. This system also removes pesticides and herbicides from your drinking water.

Purestream Water Filters offers a comprehensive range of both Countertop, and Undersink units, incorporating a 4-stage process:

  1. Stage 1: Pre filter to remove any sediment, rust etc
  2. Stage 2: Chlorine removal carbon filter as chlorine is detrimental to the cellulose reverse osmosis membrane
  3. Stage 3: Ultra-fine membrane that separates the water molecules producing pure water and waste water
  4. Stage 4: Polishing carbon to ensure an excellent final taste

Some of our systems also have an additional alkaliser or mineraliser to re-introduce essential minerals to the water which are removed as a consequence of the high level of filtration achieved by the system.
